In his book The Chinese Language: Fact and Fantasy, John
DeFrancis estimates that if learning to speak Chinese is about
five percent more difficult than learning to speak French,
then learning to read Chinese is about five times as hard as
learning to read French. To further extend this estimate to
include character hand-writing, one would have to say that
learning to write Chinese is about fifty times as hard as
learning to write French. The problem with character
hand-writing lies in that Chinese characters do not directly
reflect their pronunciations.
A specially designed Chinese learning software, new teaching
methods and techniques are adopted in our classes.
Students “write” characters on computers, rather than hand-
writing the characters, which has proven to be extremely
tedious and highly ineffective at the early stages of the
language learning process. Without spending time on
learning to write with a pen, students can concentrate on
developing their oral/aural proficiency, reading and writing
ability at a pace much faster than a traditional teaching mode
could possibly achieve.
After attended our classes, students have totally changed
their attitude toward learning Chinese. Learning with much
less frustration, students have made great progress.
Have an easy,enjoyable and effective
experience in teaching / learning Chinese
language.
Learning to write Chinese is about 50
times as hard as learning to write French.
What do we do in the class?
In our class, actually students spend no more than 15
minutes on the computer during a 90-minute session. Main
class activities include pronunciation, making phrases and
sentences, word stories, dialogues, singing, reading and
word games etc.
Our class sizes are limited to 10. We want to assure that
all the students in the class will be able to participate and
work closely with the instructor.
What do students need to do at home?
Students keep the same copy of software at home. The
software has build-in speaking and Pinyin function.
Students will be able to do typing drilling, pronunciation
practice, reading and homeworks on the software by
themselves without assistance.
We welcome both heritage and non-heritage students.
